Uninterruptible Power Supply Enhances Power Continuity for Critical Facilities

A data center recently completed the expansion and upgrade of its uninterruptible power supply system, adding three modular UPS units and increasing total backup capacity to 1.8 times the original level. This upgrade aims to accommodate the growing load of computing equipment while strengthening resilience against sudden grid fluctuations.

The core value of an uninterruptible power supply lies in providing clean and uninterrupted power to loads. When mains input is normal, the UPS delivers voltage- and frequency-stabilized AC power through dual conversion of rectification and inversion, while simultaneously charging its internal energy storage batteries. Once the UPS detects mains abnormalities or interruptions, it instantly switches to battery inverter mode with a transfer time below 2 milliseconds, ensuring that servers, storage devices, and network switches do not lose data or interrupt services due to power outages. The newly deployed units adopt three-level inverter technology, achieving overall efficiency of 96.5 percent at half-load conditions—approximately four percentage points higher than older models—effectively reducing operational energy consumption and cooling costs.

The operations team stated that this expansion not only increased total capacity but also implemented N+1 redundancy configuration, allowing any remaining units to immediately share the load if one UPS fails. With the static bypass switch and manual maintenance bypass, equipment servicing can be completed without affecting load power supply. During simulated mains sag tests, the output voltage total harmonic distortion remained below 2 percent, and the output waveform remained smooth, fully meeting the stringent power quality requirements of IT equipment. In the future, this system will be connected to the environment and equipment monitoring platform to enable remote inspection of parameters such as battery health and module temperatures.
